This is a translation from the Latin of the original paper. In this paper,
Euler proves the well known pentagonal number theorem in this paper, quite
possibly the first proof of this theorem (I have not been able to find any
earlier paper by him that gives a proof of the theorem, although in at least
one earlier paper he conjectures the validity of this theorem).
