Abstract

In the majority of the industrialized countries, the reduction of the Right of Way (RoW) of H.V. overhead lines and the search for minimum environmental impact have become two of the primary objectives of transmission system designers. The introduction of compact transmission lines allows the possibility to upgrade line voltages on the same RoW, when new corridors are not available or too expensive. The efficient use of composite insulators on overhead compact lines, also allows new concepts of compaction to be considered with better performances and more attractive cost-effectiveness. The paper shows typical configurations of compact insulating crossarms and different types of crossarm ends. A systematic study, carried out for compact HV and EHV lines, with different mechanical and electrical parameters, gives the main application criteria of these insulating crossarms up to 525 kV.
