We present a novel approach for using P2P-overlay networks to ensure a sustainable operation of a distributed system. In particular, we show how to detect and localize the causes of physical link failures using the maintenance traffic of a P2P overlay network. The network monitoring architecture can be set up autonomously thereby reducing both the installation costs and the traffic overhead.
