Motoo Kimura's Use of Diffusion Theory in Population Genetics

. Theor Popul Biol, 49 (2): 154-188 (April 1996)

Abstract

An excellent review of the early application of diffusion theory (and much else besides) to population genetics has been given by Nagylaki (1989), who concentrated particularly on the contributions by Malecot, but also discussed those by Kolmogorov, Wright, Fisher, Bartlett, Khintchine, and Kimura, among many others. Kimura has written several review articles which summarised his own diffusion work. One major one appeared in two forms: Kimura (1964); others were Crow and Kimura (1956), Kimura (1970b, 1971, 1974, 1986b). The last two chapters of the book by Crow and Kimura (1970) are devoted to diffusion theory. An appendix to the book by Kimura and Ohta (1971) and Chapter 8 in Kimura's (1983a) main exposition of neutral theory contain further material on diffusions. Here, we shall concentrate on some of his published papers, and then, only on the diffusion theory aspects. There being approximately 170 publications altogether, it is a daunting task to review even a fraction of them!
