Influence of scientific terminology on the environmental attitudes of college students

Abstract

Climate change is a serious environmental issue, but not enough is being done to slow its progress. Although many in the public are aware of it, the urgency for action is missing. One aspect of this gap is the non-acceptance of science by the public: Conventional wisdom says that terminology impedes communication of science-based messages. This research used experimental methodology to investigate the use of varying levels of scientific terminology on college students. Responses measured changes in attitude, intent, and knowledge. Significant results showed that some students subjected to scientific terminology had more environmental concern and more environmentally friendly intentions than those receiving lay terminology. It is recommended that when communicators are presenting a science-based message, they should carefully consider the inclusion of scientific terminology. Also, the researcher recommends compulsory environmental education for all post-secondary students.
