The dynamical aspects of Hubbell's neutral model of biodiversity are studied more closely. We derive dynamical equations for the mean and variance of the Simpson diversity index, an important diversity measure which can be estimated using molecular fingerprinting profiles. This is supplemented with the results of numerical simulations. Finally, we discuss the importance of dynamics and suggest some links with concrete experiments concerning microbial populations.
