The author interviewed 40 women engineering undergraduates from seven Northeast schools in a very open-ended format. Anderson found that women felt invisible in their programs and did not always receive the kind of advising they needed. Women often were encouraged to go into engineering because of their achievements in science and math in high school, but didn't really know much about the field of engineering itself until they got to college. The author then concludes that the reasons women go into engineering vary significantly from men, who traditionally have had more experience tinkering with machines, and therefore engineering is a more "natural" choice.
