Abstract
We investigate the model adopted in a recent paper in which the authors seek to explain the observed trajectory of a curling rock. We question the basis upon which the model is built, namely, frictional asymmetry arising from kinematic melting of the ice, and establish that the forms assumed for fluid friction motion are incorrect. Analytical and experimental results show that the force acting upon curling rocks is dominated by dry friction.
