Structural Integrity Assessment of Transmission Line Tower Foundations - A Comprehensive Approach

Abstract

Transmission line towers are constructed for the purpose of power evacuation from generating stations to various load centers. All through the globe they are erected in varied environments. The super structure of transmission line towers widely comprises of steel angles, conductors, insulators and earth wire and so on where as the sub structure is predominantly made up of isolated footing with embedded tower angle called stub which is covered by concrete all around. Depending upon the type of soil, the extensiveness of foundation will vary but in all types each leg of the tower will project out by a coping concrete connecting the super structure with sub structure. Occurrence of severe pitting corrosion at the stub angle concrete interface and spa/ling of cover concrete at the coping portions is quite prevalently reported all over the globe. In this article few incidences of corrosion of transmission line tower foundations and rehabilitation measures adopted have been briefly reviewed. A case study investigation involving visual inspection, non destructive and partially destructive test and chemical analysis of the powder samples collected from the transmission tower foundations to assess the structural integrity with respect to its durability aspect has been reported. Test results have been analyzed and recommendations for repair and strengthening of the structures to restore the transmission line towers based on scientific approach have been made.
