Abstract
The research project Widespread Idioms in Europe and Beyond is aimed at systematically investigating the spreading of idioms across European languages and beyond (see www.piirainen.homepage.tonline. de). One of the results is the discovery that widespread idioms do indeed exist: There may be 50 or more languages revealing the very same idiom. A projection of the data onto the geographical map of Europe enables us to draw first conclusions, since the diffusion of the idioms through European languages becomes visible. Careful philological analyses are needed to solve questions concerning the ways of diffusion of idioms across many languages of Europe and beyond. (A.)
