Abstract

Powering desktops with metadata is a promising approach leading to the semantic desktop, which will treat files as desktop ontology resources. This ontology will capture a mental model of how the user conceptualizes files, and serve to semantically reinterpret current file operations. A .doc artifact will no longer be a mere file, but rather a knowledge base resource. The user will no longer create such files, but rather instances of ontological classes. Likewise, zipping operations won't require sequentially selecting files to zip together. Instead, the semantic desktop will automatically traverse semantic associations to locate the resources to zip. The seMouse approach realizes this vision. This system provides seamless integration between file-centered tooling and semantically aware, resource-centered applications. The mouse acts as a bridge between the world of traditional files and the world of resources. Traditional tooling is still available, but the semantic mouse also enables reinterpreting traditional file operations from a semantic perspective. In this perspective, resource edition, classification, copying, and zipping benefit from the underlying ontology.
