Abstract

This chapter provides comprehensive guidelines for effective documentation practices when undertaking translations in institutional and legal contexts. It first delivers a brief overview of the instances when documentation assumes significance in the translation within these domains. It places its primary focus on quintessential scenarios, briefly evaluating the essential requirements and influences that shape the framework of documentation processes and their seamless integration into decision-making procedures. Building upon these foundations, the chapter proceeds to identify pivotal aspects of documentation relevant to the arena of legal and institutional translation. Specifically, it highlights the intricate issues that necessitate particular attention when bridging two distinct legal knowledge systems. Within this examination, the specific competencies essential for the various tasks involved in this process are brought to light. Furthermore, the chapter explores both formal and informal sources that facilitate informed decision-making during the creation of a target text (TT). Lastly, an idealized documentation environment tailored for the field of legal and institutional translation is described, wherein the avenues for resource generation, their design, and practical applications are described.
