APPLICATION OF ADVANCED METHODS TO TRANSMISSION LINE INSULATION DESIGN

Abstract

Considering recent progress in insulation research and in statistical computation of line performance, it appeared desirable to reevaluate the transmission system insulation requirements. A comprehensive series of phase-to-ground and phase-to-phase insulation tests was undertaken. The test results overlap and extend existing data, making available design curves for flashover strength in the 145-765 kV range. In addition, the magnitude of the swing angle of free - swinging insulator strings as a function of the wind velocity has been studied. The results of this study provide a better accuracy of the swing angle statistics for a reliable assessment of this important performance parameter. A statistical design procedure was applied to convert the electrical performance criteria to insulation clearances. The relativ importance of design factors and insulation duties is discussed. ~he analysis also indicates possible reductions in tower dimensions without significantly impairing line reliability.
