An elementary discussion on particle properties and physical principles is proceeded by the concepts of signal generation, particle detection and spatial encoding used in magnetic particle imaging. A general description of the hardware setups and the reconstruction methods will give an impression of common challenges and their solutions. Furthermore, the medical relevance, especially the possibility to combine diagnostics and therapy is discussed.
