Abstract

The article presents comments of the author on the February 1986, issue of "Journal of Advertising Research." According to the author, the journal is fortunate in having an oral historical record of interviews of pioneers who explored the unknown history of advertising research. According to the author, he had the privilege of meeting with and interviewing seven of the legendary practitioners of advertising research: Henry Brenner, Archibald Crossley, Ernest Dichter, George Gallup, Alfred Politz, Frank Stanton, and Hans Ziesel. The resulting interviews ranged from twenty minutes to forty minutes in length. His short-term purpose was to cut these down to a half-hour segment which would give a sense of the points of view and personalities of the seven pioneers. The true value of these interviews is that they represent oral history. According to the author, although his acquaintance with most of these pioneers of advertising research began with these interviews, he feels that he knows each of them very well because they gave so freely of themselves and their most profound thoughts about research in the course of these discussions.
