The author speculates that, because the behaviors associated with the particular pattern of calluses are so ingrained into ostriches, the calluses themselves can somehow be passed down throughout the generations. This article marks an early attempt by researchers to reevaluate the concept of inheritance of acquired characteristics, which eventually gave rise to the field of epigenetics.},
