In our previous study on the determination of sulfide ion, it was found that cyanide ion showed a fluorescence in the presence of taurine and o-phthalaldehyde (OPA). This fluorescence seems to be due to the formation of a fluorescent isoindole derivative (Fig. 1) because cyanide is known to give 1-cyano-2-methylisoindole when treated with methylamine and OPA. The present work aimed to establish a simple and sensitive fluorometric method for determining cyanide ion by using the OPA reaction.
