Abstract

Dynamical processes can be remarkably slowed down when they are performed on networks with geometric constraints, like planarity or tree-like structure. We show that, in reaction-diffusion dynamics, this slowing down is due to the diffusive component of the dynamics. Some of the basic features of diffusion are modified when it is performed on top of a tree. In particular, an aging effect appears. The average time for a couple of walkers to meet on a looped network is constant during the dynamics. On the contrary, on a tree this time increases. Thus, the geometric structure of the network changes the dynamics, making more and more difficult for the particles to meet and thus react. We show that the aging effect fully explains the slowing down observed in the annihilation-diffusion process on trees.
