On the antiaggressive effects of lithium

Psychopharmacologia, (1969)

Abstract

Studied the influence of lithium on aggressive behavior in Siamese fighting fish, mice, and golden hamsters. The fish stopped fighting when exposed to concentrations of 10-30 meq/1 LiCl in the surrounding water. The mice and hamsters also abolished intraspecific aggression after ingesting LiCl. Measurements of plasma and brain lithium levels revealed individual differences in the concentrations necessary for the antiaggressive effect. Normal aggressive behavior reappeared in all species after lithium treatment was discontinued.
