Abstract

A high amount of the transportation infrastructure in upcoming countries like India is based on old and partly damaged steel bridges that were often built more than 100 years ago. Furthermore, a growing economy comes along with increasing traffic and therefore rising loads. Due to this fact attrition is observable at these structures by means of corrosion and constant crack-growth . In general, there exist already several repair methods with some associated disadvantages. For example the demolition and a assembling of a new bridge brings considerable costs. Furthermore, the application of steel latches or the substitution of damaged parts by welding is often impossible due to the non-weldable steel that was used originally. Hence, a novel approach regarding a restoration method in order to repair and stabilize cracks in bridges (and also in other steel structures) by means of reinforcements with walers and plates is investigated. Therein, the main fields of consideration are the design of shape-optimised steel walers in conjunction with the development of a polymer adhesive as the filling material to ensure form closure. Additionally applied plates cover and protect the repaired cracks and enhance the bearing capacity. Therefor, another appropriate adhesive has to be developed due to different requirements. To meet the demands of high strength, durability and stiffness adhesives based on special polymer formulations where selected for both applications, the form closure of the walers and the covering plates.
