Аннотация

Data modeling is the process of structuring and organizing data, typically using a database management system. Utilizing a generic approach, the author looks at the common problems that are found in data models and explains how they can be improved to better meet enterprise requirements. The content of this book is relevant across many disciplines in government and industry. This particular approach to data modeling addresses a major problem facing database systems today---that is, the significant diversity in the data models that even systems with the same scope have to contend with. For example, in many countries the transportation industry is privatized in a fragmented way with different companies owning the infrastructure (i.e., trains, operating train services, maintenance of track and rolling stock, traffic control, routing, etc.). This involves being able to take a view across train systems, signaling systems, the rail network itself, condition monitoring of key equipment, and integrating that with maintenance and investment plans. Even within train systems, different fleets (from different suppliers) have different data models and software. The data modeling approach described in this book produces a data model that can be developed consistently across the whole of the scope and used to integrate the diverse existing data models described above.
