TRANSMISSION WIND LOADING DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND FIELD VERIFICATION PROGRAM

Abstract

Severe economic constraints are forcing utilities to seek more cost effective ways to design and build new transmission lines. Probabilistic design appears to offer many advantages, but there is not sufficient information on the true character of naturally occurring loads or the response of transmission lines to those loads to permit the application of probabilistic approaches with confidence. Recognizing this, the Electic Power Research Institute (EPRI) has funded, as a start, a comprehensive study into the structure of wind and the response of full scale transmission lines to it. The paper describes the nature of this research program, the instrumentation and data acquisition systems developed specifically for it and the results to date.
