Divergences between technical terminologies in different languages are not necessarily uninteresting from the semantic or lexicological point of view. Some of the major types of divergences between English and Hungarian technical terminologies will be illustrated here, and the importance of differences in the use of terminological systems for bilingual dictionary making will be stressed. Depending on the prospective user, the bilingual technical dictionary should contain some information on synonymic relations between technical and non-technical terms, preference for generic or specific term, grammar and collocational possibilities of technical terms, and the possibilities of abbreviating technical terms.
