Abstract
For companies working in the sector of industrial assembly it is important to operate assembly systems featuring an adequate level of automation and enabling fast adaption to changing production requirements. Despite of significant challenges in long-range planning due to rising market turbulences, the purpose is to operate equipment in the long run, reducing the necessary investment volume. Thus, in business practice there is a high demand for reconfigurable assembly equipment. Modularity is one of the key properties enabling reconfiguration processes. In current approaches of modularization there is a lack of assembly-oriented methods. In this publication a new approach will be introduced which, based on a detailed analysis of the products characteristics and assembly process requirements, enables the user to design functionally independent modules of assembly equipment. Using this method, modularization does not only simplify the assembly systems architecture but also enables reconfiguration on the production site.
