Abstract
For twenty years the general condition of oilfilled
electrical equipment, particularly
transformers, has been monitored by determining
dissol ved gases in oil, using gas chl'omatography.
More specific additional information can now be
obtained by quantifying heavier molecules, using
liquid chromatography. The chromatographic
techniques which are being used are described and
successful applications are presented. These
include methods for assessing the state of paper
insulation in transformers, studying other solid
polymeric materials in transformers and cables,
characterisation of insulating oils and
determination of their additive content.
