Abstract
The history of research on and development of polJlmeric insulators in the three Countries is reviewed and the
reasons for the interest of the three national Utilities are stated. Results are given of tests in the laboratory and
field and service experience is summarised. Critical features in the design of polymeric insulators are deduced from
records of failures and future testing principles are proposed. Some principal conclusions are that greater reliability is
required in polymeric insulators than is currently available, that mechanical failures are particular causes of concern
and that 120 main class of housing material is seen as clearly superior to the others.
