THE PREDICTION OF AEOLIAN VIBRATION FATIGUE DAMAGE OF TRANSMISSION LINE CABLES

.
(1960)

Abstract

The wind-induced vibration of transmission line cables is the source of numerous fatigue failures of cable strands in service. At present, the emphasis in the field is directed at reducing or eliminating the amount of vibration by the addition of vibration dampers or vibration absorbers to the transmission line, rather than at reducing the induced stress by ~mproved suspension clamp design. At the same time, little attention has been given to the fact that some level of vibration is completely tolerable. It is the purpose of this paper to outline a method of predicting the tolerable level of vibration that can be sustained and how this levei can be measured
