Abstract
Evaluating the lightning performance of an overhead power line requires
knowledge and details related to the lightning activity in the vicinity of the
line. Knowledge about the characteristics of lightning phenomena enables
engineers to understand the interaction of lightning with overhead power
lines. Particular aspects associated with lightning and lightning activity are
presented in this chapter. Also, the effects of lightning on an overhead
power line, such as induced voltages, back flash, and shielding failure are
described. Modern lightning location systems are also briefly referred to.
