Abstract

This study explored the validity of the Religious Status Inventory - Shortened and the presence of its defined 8 dimensions. Second, the relationship of religious maturity to self-esteem and identity formation was explored. Subjects included 144 randomly selected students from a small, Catholic university with an age range of 17-57. They were assessed with the Religious Status Inventory - Shortened, Religious Orientation Inventory, Self-Esteem Inventory, and Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status - 2. Correlations between the Religious Status Inventory - Shortened and Religious Orientation Inventory as well as religion scales of the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status - 2 were significant. Factor analysis didn't produce the 8 dimensions, but a general factor emerged. Significant positive correlations existed between religious maturity and both self-esteem and Identity Achieved. Religious maturity and both Diffusion and Moratorium had significant negative correlations. Levels of responses weren't significantly different across year of study. Significant negative correlations existed with age for Moratorium and Foreclosure. Males had significantly higher self-esteem. The relationship between religious maturity and self-esteem was significantly higher for females. A significant relationship between religious maturity and self-esteem was found for the 20-24 and 40 plus age groups. Most age groups showed significant negative correlations between religious maturity and both Moratorium and Diffusion. The 20-24 age group had a significant positive relationship between religious maturity and Identity Achieved. This study concludes that the Religious Status Inventory - Shortened is a valid global measure of religious maturity but does not have the 8 dimensions. Relationships between religious maturity and both self-esteem and identity exists but varies across age and gender.
