An Investigation of a Method for Identifying a Software Architecture Candidate with Respect to Quality Attributes.

, and . Empirical Software Engineering, 10 (2): 149-181 (2005)

Description

A controlled experiment is conducted in order to validate the method introduced in "Quality attribute-driven selection of software architecture structures". This is done by having eight subjects giving ratings for several different architectures in relation to quality attributes. Also, the different architectures and the different quality attributes are rated amongst each other. Within the experiment the answers to the following research questions are given: Q11 Is the perception of the strengths and weaknesses of different architecture candidates with respect to different quality attributes the same amongst a set of subjects? Q12 Is the perception of which architecture candidates that best fulfill different quality attributes the same amongst a set of subjects? Q21 Is the perceived influence of different quality attributes ranked differently fr different software architectures? Q22 Are software architectures perceived as supporting different quality attributes differently? The answer to question Q11 and Q12 is that the perception of software architectures with respect to quality attributes is similar amongst the set of subjects used. The conclusion of questions Q21 and Q22 is that there indeed exists a difference between the candidate architectures to warrant the choice of one candidate over another given a set of quality attributes.
