From molecules, single cells and tissues to whole organisms, our insights
into Ca$^2+$ signalling and the corresponding physiological phenomena
are growing exponentially. Here, we describe the improvements that
have been made in the development of the probes and instrumentation
that are used for Ca$^2+$ imaging and the expanding applications
of Ca$^2+$ imaging in basic and applied research.
