‘Learning the language of school history: the role of linguistics in mapping the writing demands of the secondary school curriculum’, Journal of Curriculum Studies, vol. 38, no. 4. pp. 413–29

. Open Research Online, (2006)

Description

The article is concerned with how students in later school years use different language and grammatical structures. The more advanced the student the more abstract the writing as it becomes more evaluative. The evaluative conclusion shows Coffin suggesting that to be successful history teachers need to be prepared to teach language so that students can structure their responses appropriately.
