Galloping is the phenomenon seriously impairing the
operation of overhead transmission line, against
which each country has difficulty in taking
appropriate countermeasures. As the method of
suppressing such a galloping phenomenon, the
galloping control devices aiming at prevention of
harmonic growth of torsional and vertical motions
of multi-bundled conductor were developed in Japan.
At the initial stage after the development, these
devices were installed on a few actual lines for
verification of its suppressing effect and , as the
result , the possibility of widely reducing the
tension var iation a nd amplitude of conductors was
verified . Thereafter , same devices were installed
to about 40 lines and have been oper a t ed for abou;
10 years since then. During this period those
lines have never encountered any trouble caused by
galloping . Thus, the devices have contributed t o
imp~ovement of the reliability of overhead transmission
lines.
