From laboratory test on a number of naturally
polluted insulator strings, the characteristic
curves and regression equation of pollution
flashover voltage versus equivalent salt
deposit density (ESDD) and leakage current have
been determined. The safety factor presented by
the paper may be used for the selection of insulators
for polluted areas. The values of critical
warning current which may be used for assessing
the behaviour of power system insulation
are based on the analysis of the existing problems
in using "ESDD" in the insulation design
for polluted areas and on the relationship between
pollution flashover voltage and leakage
current.
