SOME EFFECTS OF THE ENVIRONMENT ON THE ROUTING OF RECENT 330 kV TRANSMISSION LINES IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

. (1981)

Abstract

The State Energy Commission of Western Australia planned to extend the power station at Muja, on the Collie coalfield 200 kilometres South East of Perth, by installing two 200MW generators. Two transmission lines operating at 330kV AC were required to transfer the power from the generators to Perth, where it would feed into the metropolitan grid system. The transmission lines were routed apart to obtain maximum security in the event of lightning strike, bushfires or aircraft mishap. Part of each line was routed on the coastal plain whilst the remainder of both traverse the hills through the Northern Jarrah Forest. The environmental problems associated with routing the lines through the forest are discussed. Of particular interest are; 1.A forest disease which has seriously affected the indigenous trees and the care which has had to be taken during the construction of the transmission lines to avoid aggravation of this problem. 2.The routing of the transmission lines through a high salinity water catchment and a bauxite mining area.
