SPECIAL ASPECTS OF INSULATORS FORHVDC TRANSMISSION LINES AND STATION

, , and .
(1991)

Abstract

It has been reported that much more line insulators had failed on DC lines than on AC lines. In addition many flashover faults also have been reported on the DC lines and stations under polluted conditions. In view of these facts, the insulators for DC should not be the same as that for AC. And special design and material is required for HVDC insulators•from the view points of pollution characteristics, hardware corrosion and deterioration of insulation material. Many studies on pollution characteristics have been made and optimum design of shed profile is determined. And to cope with pin corrosion of line insulators, sacrificial electrode made of pure zinc around the pin shank is found effective both from laboratory tests and field experiences among various metal materials. In addition, the study on deterioration of a certain kind of HVDC insulator is mentioned and some test procedures to evaluate such performance are also explained.
