Abstract

This paper presents an analytical approach use for the calculation of transmission-line lightning outages, bringing the attention to the development of a universal chart for the evaluation of the impact of to11er footing resistance on the outage rate, providing an insight into the interaction of tower grounding and tower insulation in establishing the r eliability of a line. A particular tower design is selected, and the number of outages is estimated by one recent an efficient method available (2), including weather statistics, and tower footing resistance analyzed under individual bases. This method can be used in specific designs for the selection of the minimum grounding and outage cost.
