Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to detail the factors contributing to Virginia Power's decision to use polymer housed metal-oxide surge arresters to improve the lightning performance of their 138 kV system. This paper reviews traditional and modern lightning protection methods and the various parameters that influence their effectiveness.
