Abstract
The Paper presents a summary of the study made on this subject at the Transformer Colloquium held in Haögate,
England, September 1979 under the direction of W. J. MCNutt.
Short-circuit withstand has been a serious problem throughout the world in the past and has been given consideration
at several previous CIGRE Sessions. However, understanding of the subject has increased significantly in
recent years, design capability has been improved, and standards documents which define requirements have been
strengthened. This seemed the right moment to re-assess the state-of-the-art in withstand capability assurance.
Four major areas of concern related to the subject were dealt with successively. The detailed discussions by the
collected experts were prefaced by an introductory prepared presentation by each of the co-authors of this report,
as indicated below :
- Definition of Performance Requirements
- Design Practices
Calculation Techniques
Model Testing
- Manufacturing Practices
- Proof Testing of Completed Transformers
