Abstract
As a graphic form, the depiction of space in visual language is essential to the way it conveys
information, and studies have hinted to the existence of cross-cultural variation. To examine this
property, 300 panels in each of twelve American and twelve Japanese comic books were coded
for their spatial properties, showing clear differences in certain domains.
