Abstract

Any increase in power consumption will lead to an increase in the capacity of the power transformer. Any increase in the transformer's capacity will generate a greater current. Excess current is a major cause of a temperature rise caused by the loss of tank. Thermal ageing of the insulating material can also shorten the life of the transformer. This paper presents an analysis of the predicted temperature rise which occurs at the transformer tank because of magnetic flux at high current levels. Analysis is conducted of the temperature rise of the transformer through calculating the loss occurring at the Ht (Tangential field) Tank surface according to the surface impedance boundary condition. Calculation of the temperature rise was performed in consideration of proportional loss and temperature. This calculated result was compared with the experimental results for the temperature rise of the test chamber and 360 MVA transformer.
