CABLE MECHANICS - OVERHEAD CABLES AND OPTICAL GROUND WIRES

.
(1988)

Abstract

Safety and reliability of electric systems have always been issues because of the high reliability requirements of power supply in this nation. These demands are ever increasing. Overhead cables represent a significant portion of electric power facilities. These cables have a finite life and their safety and reliability depend upon the way they are used and the static and dynamic loads they endure. It is the purpose of this paper to review the forces which act on cables and how service life is affected. The expanded use of fiber optics in the electric power industry has introduced the use of optical ground wires (OPGW) to the family of overhead cables and these also are influenced by the same forces •
