Abstract
The "Elektrizitatswerk des Kantons
Obwalden" (EWO) have studied the possibility
of integrating a new data transmission
system in a medium voltage
~istribution network. The advantages
;oncerning the choice of optical fibre
technology with respect to the specific
considerations of energy distribution
are pondered.
In practice, the problem was to connect
existing sub-stations with a new
principal command center for management
and remote control of the network. In
other words, a new interconnecting
structure of optical cables had to be
installed, including opto-electronic
interfaces especially adapted to the
existing and commercially available
equipment.
The development of opto-electronic
interfaces specific to this type of
installation including modems and
multiplexers used in binary data transmission
is analyzed.
The system commands and controls all
he elements of the network such as the
circuit-breakers, isolating switches,
transformer stations, etc ... and insures
the following principal functions:
information output, procedure control,
data acquisition, and automation.
