Abstract

Wind-induced vibrations are known to cause damage to the conductors and related hardware through fatigue or clashing of the bundled conductors. Eskom has decided to follow a comprehensive programme on the control ofoverhead mechanical oscillations, which includes aeolian and wake-induced vibration. A full scale transmission line test station, situated in the Orange Free State in South Africa, is being utilised for the studying of both aeolian and wake-induced vibration. Vibration data, consisting of both level of vibration and frequency, as well as windspeed and wind direction, were logged over a two and a half month period and analysed. Results indicate that the Stockbridge damper and Spacer dampers, as tested during this period, are all effective for the damping of aeolian vibration. The vibration levels experienced by all of the undamped single conductors, all exceed their respective safe bending amplitudes. A summary is provided, indicating results and experience obtained from the test site to date.
