Abstract

Five articles on the role of public libraries in contemporary Japan. The centrality of lending services is discussed in the context of the legacy of the 1970 report "Shimin no toshokan" (Citizen's libraries). The nature of book lending must be re-examined considering quality as well as quantity, especially following the media debate over multiple copies of bestsellers. Other important issues are employment of professional librarians, and libraries as a focus for local information. Emphasis should shift from loans to use. Original article in Japanese.
