BEHAVIOUR OF BUNDLED CONDUCTORS IN SUBSTATIONS UNDER HIGH SHORT-CIRCUIT CURRENTS

Abstract

High short-circuit currents induce electromagnetic forces between subconductors of bundled conductors in 2.1 Recurrent Method2) substations, which are large enough that the conductors clash together. During this phenomenon significant stresses appear in the phase conductors and bundle spacers. This report briefly reviews some theoretical studies which have been carried out to develop methods to predict approximately the stresses under such conditions and describes the results of a comparative parameter study which illustrates the sensitivity of the stresses to suspension bus design factors such as short-circuit current, conductor size, bundle spacing and subspan length.
