Abstract
This chapter gives a brief overview of some of the important bare conductors available
for use on overhead power lines. The basic principles applicable to the optimal selection
of conductor size are discussed. This chapter also presents a novel procedure, formulated
to optimise the selection of the conductor and tower configuration from the point of
view of an overall system. The procedure highlights the significance of incorporating in the
optimisation algorithm the following factors: planning and load forecast considerations,
power quality constraints, voltage collapse studies, line performance studies, corona and
audible noise, induction and transposition studies, and life-cycle cost of maintenance for
the different options. The methodology and results of a case study are presented to
demonstrate the proposed procedure.
