End Effect Bending Stresses in Cables

.
(1969)

Abstract

A 11 analysis of brnding stresses in fl exible cables has been carried out. It has been f o1111d /h at stresses which arise due lo fixity at the bo1m1faries or other points of disco11- lin11i/y, decay in an exponential manner from such boundaries, similar to the edge effect solutions of shell theory. Such a phenomenon makes it possible to analyze a finite cable of sufficient length using solutions which are applicable only to infinite or t•ery long cables. In this way the cumbersome but otherwise exact solutions of the elaslica are replaced by much simpler ones of sufficient engineering accuracy. The /_erm "sufficient lwgth" is defined as par/ of the analysis.
