Abstract
In today's openztional environment, utility
transmissi.on engineen are being chalknged with a new set of
design parameten. In addition to llu tra4iJional objecdve of
system reliability, 11ew issues. of parallUllUU importance have
evolved. These include llu reductio11 of construction costs,
addressing transmissi.on line aesthdia, and optimizing power
delivery within restridd right of way. This docunwll describes a
design approach which enables the engineer to maximize these
criUria wiJhout sacrlf1eing system reliabilily. A laboratory test
method for polynur post insullllors if also presented which
effectively simulates combined mechanical load conditions expected
iii applkalion, thus allowing the utility engineer to optimiu span
lengths, conducJor size, and insulator selection. Polymer history
and btinefd$ associaUd with compad line design are also revi4wed.
