Abstract

The locus of this study was the adult and continuing education program at a small historically Black private college. The study was projected as an aid to others at small institutions in their effort to systematically note and assess the various facets of a program's history, current actions and direction, and as a guide for integrating these data into a comprehensive description, on the basis of which strengths and weaknesses can be clearly understood. The case selected for the study was the adult and continuing education program at Shaw University located in Raleigh, North Carolina. A conceptual frame of reference was developed to provide a schema for describing an organization within a system, certain aspects of behavior, and ways these aspects fit together and affect each other. The study involved (1) outlining the history; (2) a systems analysis; and (3) ascertaining the interaction processes which operate within the adult and continuing education program at Shaw University. Methodology utilized for the collection of data included the personal interview, a written questionnaire, and credible data extracted from authentic materials. Conclusions. Historically, adult and continuing education at Shaw University began December 1, 1865 when its founder, Henry Martin Tupper, assembled a class of freedmen to provide biblical instruction which would enable them to become leaders and establishers of churches, conventions, and associations to carry on the work of the Baptist church. Shaw University operated the University Without Walls program which ended in 1976 and was modified into the Center for Alternative Progams of Education (CAPE). Outstanding features of CAPE are its locations and the excellent relationship which Shaw University has with one of its most ardent supporters, the General Baptist Convention of North Carolina, Incorporated. The drive, devotion, ability and determination of former presidents, administrators, faculty and staff have constituted strong resources in the creation, development and success of CAPE. Much energy has been expended by the Shaw University Administration to make CAPE successful. This relatively new program has not experienced any major crises.
